Laura's Bracelet (originally thought to be The Light of Zartha)
The Light of Zartha is a powerful cosmic force that Zarthan princess Lauranna left behind on her visit to Earth. Pursued by the Kylothian queen, Serleena (who planned to use its power to destroy Zartha), Lauranna sought refuge on Earth, where she requested that The Men in Black safeguard the light to protect their planet. However, as this would risk retaliation from The Kylothians, endangering Earth, MIB was forced to remain neutral.
During her time on Earth, Lauranna had become romantically involved with Agent K (which led to the conception of their daughter). Because of this, K disobeyed his orders and helped hide the young child on in a safe place under the protection of another Zarthan who would later pose as her employer while he waited for the time when The Light would need to return to Zartha.
Serleena, still determined to obtain The Light, eventually confronted MIB and Lauranna, demanding they reveal its location to her. However, K refused. In order to further mislead Serleena, he launched a remote rocket into space, claiming the light was onboard. Caught off guard by this, Serleena was unable to stop it from taking off. Enraged, Serleena murdered Lauranna before escaping, leaving behind only her Zarthan bracelet that K would bequeath to their daughter, Laura. K would later neuralize himself, erasing his memories of the incident in an effort to keep Laura safe. After chasing the rocket for many years, Serleena finally caught up with it, only to learn it was merely a decoy and The Light had never left Earth.
During the events of Men in Black II, Serleena returns to Earth seeking The Light again. Enlisting the help of local Alien Scrad (along with a number of other intergalactic criminals), Serleena managed to track The Light to a pizzeria where Laura had been working for many years. After finding Laura, Serleena attempted to capture her, but was stopped by Agent J and recently de-neuralyzed K. The Light is thought to be Laura's bracelet until K reveals that it is, in fact, Laura herself. Having reached maturity, Laura is expected to return to Zartha and lead her people. After accepting who she really is, Laura returns to her planet in a spaceship that had been hidden near Liberty Island.
Composition and Ability[]
It is never explained what The Light itself truly is or how it functions (save for the fact that it can be weaponized to cataclysmic effects). Given that Laura herself is revealed to be The Light, it is unclear how it was brought to Earth and offered to MIB prior to Laura's conception (implied to have occurred some time after arriving on Earth and meeting K). One possible explanation is that as The Princess of Zartha, Lauranna acted as a vessel to The Light and possessed the ability to imbue it in another person of her choosing. Thus, she chose Laura, who she left on Earth to protect from Serleena. Provided this is the case, it is unknown if The Light can be imbued within any person of any species, those with Zarthan blood, or only members of The Zarthan Royal Family. It seems that being a full Zarthan is not necessary however, as Laura (heavily implied to be Kay and Lauranna's daughter) was capable of bearing The Light.
It is unclear what abilities The Light grants its vessel, aside from being affected by the presence of Zarthan technology (such as the bracelet Laura inherited and a hidden spacecraft left on Earth for Laura to return to Zartha). K explains to Laura that her sadness causes it to rain. However, it is unclear if this is due to The Light's power, her Zarthan physiology, or her royal heritage.
